What Happens If You Return Earlier Than Your Airport Parking Reservation?

Returning earlier than your Newark Airport parking reservation

The short answer

You can come back any time. At Newark Airport Long Term Parking (NALTP), our shuttles run on demand 24 hours a day, whether you return early, on time, or late. When you land at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), text your terminal letter and claim check number and we’ll send a driver. What changes is the money. Once a reservation starts, unused time isn’t refunded, so coming home early doesn’t earn you money back. That’s standard for prepaid airport parking, including the Port Authority’s own prebooked lots at EWR. If you’re coming back later instead, you can extend your reservation and pay for the added time.

Trips end early for all kinds of reasons. A meeting wraps a day ahead, the weather turns, a family emergency calls you home, or an airline moves you to an earlier flight. We run a lot two to three minutes from EWR, and our shuttles handle returns at every hour of the day. Here is exactly what happens, why the money works the way it does, and how to plan so you don’t pay for days you won’t use.

Back early
Text us and we’ll pick you up. There’s no refund for the unused part of your reservation.
Back on schedule
Text us and we’ll pick you up. Your estimated return time doesn’t have to be exact.
Back late
Extend your reservation and pay for the added time. We’ll still pick you up whenever you land.

What happens when you come back early

Nothing about the pickup changes. You don’t need to call ahead or rebook anything. The process is the same as it would be on your scheduled day.

  1. Collect your bags first

Wait until you have your luggage from baggage claim. That way your driver isn’t circling while you wait at the carousel.

  2. Text your terminal letter and claim check number

Send it to the number on the claim check card we gave you. If you’re at Terminal A and your claim check number is 5132, you’d text “A 5132.” LTP Club members can also request pickup with one tap in the NALTP app.

  3. Walk to your pickup spot

All pickups are on Level One. Your spot depends on your terminal, and the table below has the details.

  4. Ride back to your car

The ride takes two to three minutes. We’ll unload your luggage at your car, and you check out at the exit lane on your way home.

Full details and maps on our terminal pickup page.
Terminal Where to wait on Level One
Terminal A Go out the doors and cross onto the island. Walk all the way to the left and stand at sign #14.
Terminal B Walk out the doors and cross to the second island. Stand under sign #5.
Terminal C Walk out the doors and cross the street onto the island. Go to the far left end and stand next to pole #1.

Why early returns aren’t refunded

When you reserve, we set aside a space for your car for every day on your reservation. On busy dates, that means turning away other drivers who wanted it. If you pick up your car two days early, that space often sits empty for those two days, because the drivers we turned away have already parked somewhere else. That’s why a reservation becomes non-refundable once it starts, the same way a no-show forfeits payment.

We’re not unusual here. The Port Authority’s prebooked parking at Newark Liberty states that it doesn’t refund shorter stays, and most national parking chains and airport-run programs handle prepaid reservations the same way.

How to avoid paying for days you don’t use

You can’t get money back after you’ve parked, but a little planning before you park goes a long way.

Cancel before the reservation starts if plans change

If your trip changes before you leave home, you have options. Reservations are fully refundable up to their start date and time. Cancel yourself using the link at the bottom of your confirmation email, then rebook for your new dates. Refunds usually reach your card in three to five days.

Book your realistic return, not a padded one

Many travelers add an extra day “just in case.” With us, you don’t need to, because you can extend if your trip runs long and you only pay for the added time. Book the return you actually expect.

If your return date is uncertain, book the earliest likely date

Open-ended business trips and family visits are hard to pin down. Reserve through the earliest day you might realistically come home, then extend if you stay longer. That way you’re paying for time you use rather than time you might use.

Know how parking days are counted

We bill in 24-hour intervals that start when you park. If you drop your car at 6 a.m. and come back a few hours earlier than you estimated, but still within the same interval, your total is exactly the same. Your drop-off and return times are estimates, and we don’t hold you to them.

Lower the cost of every day

The less each day costs, the less an unused day costs. LTP Club members reserve from $18.99 per day, compared with $30 for a standard online reservation and $35 for walk-ins, before taxes and fees. Membership is free. If you’re weighing whether to book ahead at all, our guide to reserving Newark Airport parking online walks through the math.

If you’re coming back later instead

A late return is simpler than most people expect. You can extend your reservation, and you’re charged for the additional time. Our shuttle still runs on demand, so if your delayed flight lands at 2 a.m., a driver will come out for you. For more on handling a delayed flight while your car is parked, see our post on what happens if your flight is delayed while your car is parked at EWR.

A canceled departure is a different situation, and we have a specific policy for it. If your outbound flight is canceled and moved to the next day, we reopen your reservation at checkout, charge a canceled flight fee of 50 percent of the daily rate, and you use the same reservation the following day. Our cancellation and other policies page has the details.

How this compares with the Port Authority’s prebooked lots

If you’ve parked on-airport at EWR before, here is how the rules differ once your trip changes.

Port Authority terms from its EWR prebooked parking FAQ, checked September 29, 2026.
If your plans change Newark Airport Long Term Parking Port Authority prebooked lots
You come back early No refund for unused time No refund for shorter stays
You come back late Extend your reservation and pay for the added time More than two hours past your booking is billed as an overstay at drive-up rates
Changing after you’ve parked You can extend while you’re away Changes are allowed only up to one hour before arrival, and not once you’re parked
Weather or airline problems Extend as needed, with a specific policy for canceled departures The Port Authority says it can’t be responsible for airline or weather issues
Getting back to your car On-demand shuttle, 24 hours a day, requested by text Walk, AirTrain, or the scheduled P6 shuttle, depending on the lot

Parking that runs on your schedule

Trips change. The pickup shouldn’t. Our shuttles run on demand around the clock, our lot is fenced and monitored 24 hours a day, and extending a reservation is simple if you need more time. We’ve been doing this two to three minutes from EWR since 1994.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick up my car early from Newark Airport Long Term Parking?

Yes. You can come back any time, day or night. Our shuttles run on demand 24 hours a day, whether you return early, on time, or late. When you land, text your terminal letter and claim check number, and we’ll send a driver to pick you up.

Will I get a refund if I come back before my reservation ends?

No. Once your reservation starts, unused time isn’t refunded, because we held that space for you for the full reservation. This is standard for prepaid airport parking. The Port Authority’s own prebooked lots at Newark Liberty also don’t refund shorter stays.

What if my trip changes before I leave home?

Cancel before your reservation starts and you’ll get a full refund. Use the cancel link at the bottom of your confirmation email. Refunds usually take three to five days to appear on your card.

What if I’m coming back later than my reservation?

You can extend your reservation, and you’re charged for the additional time. Our shuttle will still pick you up whenever you land, even in the middle of the night.

How do I get picked up when I land at EWR?

Collect your bags, then text your terminal letter and claim check number to the number on the claim check card we gave you. For example, if you’re at Terminal A and your claim check number is 5132, text “A 5132.” A driver will head your way right away.

Do I need to tell you if I’m coming back early?

No. You don’t need to call ahead for an early return. Just text us when you land, and we’ll send a shuttle.

How are parking days counted?

We bill in 24-hour intervals that start when you park. Coming back a few hours earlier than your estimated return, within the same interval, doesn’t change what you paid.

What should I do if my return flight is canceled?

Extend your reservation to cover the extra time. When you finally land, text us your terminal letter and claim check number, and we’ll pick you up at any hour.
